    Nymphomaniac, Lars von Trier (Director's Cut):

    Five and a half hours of my life I'm not getting back. Generally his films are ugly in such a gut-wrenching, important way that it's worth putting up with his background misogyny. This is just ugly for the sake of his misogyny front and center. Still beautifully shot, I'll give him that much.

    Anywhere I Lay My Head, Tom Waits

    My head is spinning round

    My heart is in my shoes

    I went and set the Thames on fire

    Now I must come back down

    She's laughing in her sleeve at me

    I can feel it in my bones

    But anywhere I'm gonna

    Lay my head boys

    I will call my home

    Well I see that

    The world is upside down

    My pockets were filled up with gold

    Now the clouds have covered o'er

    And the wind is blowing cold

    I don't need anybody

    Because I learned to be alone

    And anywhere

    I lay my head boys

    I will call my home

    Who By Fire, Leonard Cohen

    And who by fire, who by water,
    who in the sunshine, who in the night time,
    who by high ordeal, who by common trial,
    who in your merry merry month of may,
    who by very slow decay,
    and who shall I say is calling?

    And who in her lonely slip, who by barbiturate,
    who in these realms of love, who by something blunt,
    and who by avalanche, who by powder,
    who for his greed, who for his hunger,
    and who shall I say is calling?

    And who by brave assent, who by accident,
    who in solitude, who in this mirror,
    who by his lady's command, who by his own hand,
    who in mortal chains, who in power,
    and who shall I say is calling?

    Hopeless Wanderer, Mumford & Sons

    You heard my voice I came out of the woods by choice
    Shelter also gave their shade
    But in the dark I have no name

    So leave that click in my head
    And I will remember the words that you said
    Left a clouded mind and a heavy heart
    But I was sure we could see a new start

    So when your hope's on fire
    But you know your desire
    Don't hold a glass over the flame
    Don't let your heart grow cold
    I will call you by name
    I will share your road

    But hold me fast, Hold me fast
    'Cause I'm a hopeless wanderer
    And hold me fast, Hold me fast
    'Cause I'm a hopeless wanderer

    I wrestled long with my youth
    We tried so hard to live in the truth
    But do not tell me all is fine
    When I lose my head, I lose my spine

    So leave that click in my head
    And I won't remember the words that you said
    You brought me out from the cold
    Now, how I long, how I long to grow old

    So when your hope's on fire
    But you know your desire
    Don't hold a glass over the flame
    Don't let your heart grow cold
    I will call you by name
    I will share your road

    But hold me fast, Hold me fast
    'Cause I'm a hopeless wanderer
    And hold me fast, Hold me fast
    'Cause I'm a hopeless wanderer
    I will learn, I will learn to love the skies I'm under
    I will learn, I will learn to love the skies I'm under
    The skies I'm under

    Black Acres, Elysian Fields

    Whirlwind
    Take me there
    Where I will be
    His lady fair
    Sheets of night
    Hiding us
    Gusts of wind
    Riding us
    I'm blown away
    Into his hands
    I'm weak and high
    Can barely stand

    In the web
    Of dizzy leaves
    Virgins all
    Elude the trees

    Touch me now
    Touch me
    The black acres
    Are claiming me
    They're claiming me

    He holds me up
    Like a babe
    Pressing close
    I can't behave
    I need to have
    This little death
    I'm up against
    His downy chest

    In the web
    Of dizzy leaves
    Virgins all
    Elude the trees
    The chill is flush
    With burning flesh
    It's so refined
    This little death

    Touch me now
    Touch me
    The black acres
    Are claiming me
    They're claiming me

    Touch me now
    Touch me
    The black acres
    Are claiming me
    They're claiming me
    Black acres

    I'm running
    Away from home
    Black acres
    And the wind
    The wind is blowing
    Black acres
    And the weathervane
    Its heathen song
    Lulls the world
    With silver tongue

    Touch me now
    Touch me
    The black acres
    Are claiming me
    They're claiming me

    Mad Tom of Bedlam, Jolie Holland

    To see Mad Tom of Bedlam
    Ten thousand miles I've travelled
    Mad Maudlin goes on dirty toes
    To save her shoes from gravel

    It's well that we sing bonney boys
    Bonney mad boys
    Bedlam boys are bonney
    For they all go bare, and they live in the air
    And they want no drink nor money

    I went down to Satan's kitchen
    For to break my fast one morning
    And there I got souls popping hot
    All on the spits a-turnin'

    It's well that we sing bonney boys
    Bonney mad boys
    Bedlam boys are bonney
    For they all go bare, and they live in the air
    And they want no drink nor money

    They' spirits got hot as lightning
    Did on that journey guide me
    The sun did shake and the pale moon quake
    Wherever they did spy me

    Yet it's well that we sing bonney boys
    Bonney mad boys
    Bedlam boys are bonney
    For they all go bare, and they live in the air
    And they want no drink nor money

    My staff has murdered giants
    And my pack a long knife carries
    For to slice mince pies from children's thighs
    From which to feed the faeries

    It's well that we sing bonney boys
    Bonney mad boys
    Bedlam boys are bonney
    For they all go bare, and they live in the air
    And they want no drink nor money

    Tonight I'll go a murderin'
    The man in the moon to a powder
    His dog I'll shake and his staff I'll break
    And I'll howl a wee bit louder

    It's well that we sing bonney boys
    Bonney mad boys
    Bedlam boys are bonney
    For they all go bare, and they live in the air
    And they want no drink nor money

    To see Mad Tom of Bedlam
    Ten thousand miles I've travelled

    The Waste Land, T.S. Eliot (excerpt)

    April is the cruellest month, breeding
    Lilacs out of the dead land, mixing
    Memory and desire, stirring
    Dull roots with spring rain.
    Winter kept us warm, covering
    Earth in forgetful snow, feeding
    A little life with dried tubers.
    Summer surprised us, coming over the Starnbergersee
    With a shower of rain; we stopped in the colonnade,
    And went on in sunlight, into the Hofgarten,
    And drank coffee, and talked for an hour.
    Bin gar keine Russin, stamm’ aus Litauen, echt deutsch.
    And when we were children, staying at the arch-duke’s,
    My cousin’s, he took me out on a sled,
    And I was frightened. He said, Marie,
    Marie, hold on tight. And down we went.
    In the mountains, there you feel free.
    I read, much of the night, and go south in the winter.

    What are the roots that clutch, what branches grow
    Out of this stony rubbish? Son of man,
    You cannot say, or guess, for you know only
    A heap of broken images, where the sun beats,
    And the dead tree gives no shelter, the cricket no relief,
    And the dry stone no sound of water. Only
    There is shadow under this red rock,
    (Come in under the shadow of this red rock),
    And I will show you something different from either
    Your shadow at morning striding behind you
    Or your shadow at evening rising to meet you;
    I will show you fear in a handful of dust.

    The Second Coming, William Butler Yeats

    Turning and turning in the widening gyre
    The falcon cannot hear the falconer;
    Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
    Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
    The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
    The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
    The best lack all conviction, while the worst
    Are full of passionate intensity.

    Surely some revelation is at hand;
    Surely the Second Coming is at hand.
    The Second Coming! Hardly are those words out
    When a vast image out of Spiritus Mundi
    Troubles my sight: somewhere in sands of the desert
    A shape with lion body and the head of a man,
    A gaze blank and pitiless as the sun,
    Is moving its slow thighs, while all about it
    Reel shadows of the indignant desert birds.
    The darkness drops again; but now I know
    That twenty centuries of stony sleep
    Were vexed to nightmare by a rocking cradle,
    And what rough beast, its hour come round at last,
    Slouches towards Bethlehem to be born?

    For Desire, Kim Addonzio

    Give me the strongest cheese, the one that stinks best;

    and I want the good wine, the swirl in crystal

    surrendering the bruised scent of blackberries,

    or cherries, the rich spurt in the back

    of the throat, the holding it there before swallowing.

    Give me the lover who yanks open the door

    of his house and presses me to the wall

    in the dim hallway, and keeps me there until I'm drenched

    and shaking, whose kisses arrive by the boatload

    and begin their delicious diaspora

    through the cities and small towns of my body.

    To hell with the saints, with martyrs

    of my childhood meant to instruct me

    in the power of endurance and faith,

    to hell with the next world and its pallid angels

    swooning and sighing like Victorian girls.

    I want this world. I want to walk into

    the ocean and feel it trying to drag me along

    like I'm nothing but a broken bit of scratched glass,

    and I want to resist it. I want to go

    staggering and flailing my way

    through the bars and back rooms,

    through the gleaming hotels and weedy

    lots of abandoned sunflowers and the parks

    where dogs are let off their leashes

    in spite of the signs, where they sniff each

    other and roll together in the grass, I want to

    lie down somewhere and suffer for love until

    it nearly kills me, and then I want to get up again

    and put on that little black dress and wait

    for you, yes you, to come over here

    and get down on your knees and tell me

    just how fucking good I look

    Vowels/Voyelles, Arthur Rimbaud (Wyatt Mason translation)

    Black A, White E, Red I, Green U, Blue O: vowels.
    Someday I'll explain your burgeoning births:
    A, a corset; black and hairy, buzzing with flies
    Bumbling like bees around a merciless stench,

    And shadowy gulfs; E, white vapors and tents, proud
    Glacial peaks, white kings, shivering Queen Anne's lace;
    I, purples, bloody spittle, lips' lovely laughter
    In anger or drunken contrition;

    U, cycles, divine vibrations of viridian seas,
    Peace of pastures sown with beasts, wrinkles
    Stamped on studious brows as if by alchemy;

    O, that last Trumpet, overflowing with strange discord;
    Silences bridged by Worlds and Angels:
    --O the Omega, the violet beams from His Eyes!

    --

    A noir, E blanc, I rouge, U vert, O bleu: voyelles,
    Je dirai quelque jour vos naissances latentes:
    A, noir corset velu des mouches éclatantes
    Qui bombinent autour des puanteurs cruelles;

    Golfes d'ombre; E, candeurs des vapeurs et des tentes,
    Lances des glaciers fiers, rois blancs, frissons d'ombelles;
    I, pourpres, sang craché, rire des lèvres belles
    Dans la colère ou les ivresses pénitentes;

    U, cycles, vibrements divins des mers virides,
    Paix des pâtis semés d'animaux, paix des rides
    Que l'alchimie imprime aux grands fronts studieux;

    O, suprême Clairon plein des strideurs étranges,
    Silence traversés des Mondes et des Anges:

    --O l'Oméga, rayon violet de Ses Yeux!

    Bits of Reminiscence, Shu Ting

    A toppled wine-cup,

    A stone path floating beneath the moon

    Where the grass was trampled;

    One azalea branch left lying there…

    Eucalyptus trees began to spin

    In a collage of stars

    As I sit on the rusted anchor,

    The dizzy sky reflected in my eyes.

    A book held up to shut out candlelight;

    Fingers lightly at your mouth;

    In the fragile cup of silence

    A dream, half-illuminated, half-obscure.

    Handling The Undead, John Ajvide Lindqvist-- A zombie novel where the horror is (mostly) not the zombies themselves, but the permanence of death and the nature of grief. More introspective and literary than expected. I do wish it had been longer so a bit more could have been explored in-depth, but as someone hit fairly recently by grief this was a devastating meditation on it.

Had some minor quibbles with his writing style, but overall really got invested in the characters and really enjoyed the scenes with the monster. He did a great job showing his research in little details without it getting dry.

    Getting into the harder stuff now-- conjunctions and grammar are not NEARLY as fun or easy as learning the names of colors or zoo animals. I think it's time to start supplementing my apps with some more in-depth guides.

    Spring-- Growing up in Michigan with long harsh winters, I definitely learned to appreciate spring. I love the end of the cold bleak weather and the beginning of warm breezes, fresh air, open windows, everything sprouting up green and coming into flower.

    Cooking-- I love how sensory it is, the sound of things steaming and sizzling and chopping, the colors of fresh ingredients, the feel of them under my hands, the look of the ingredients being transformed, and of course the taste. I love unwinding with Ella Fitzgerald on and my cute apron on and a glass of wine or beer in my hand while I cook.

    Forests-- I grew up next to a nature preserve and my entire childhood was filled with exploring the woods, with hunting for mushrooms and berries and bugs and learning to identify leaves and wildflowers, imagining myself in a hundred different fantasy novels. It's still the place that brings me the greatest calm and peace.

    Finally got around to this one to give myself a break from a ton of spring cleaning and decluttering! I am highly recommending Bath & Body Work's pedicure stuff from their True Blue Spa line-- I exfoliated with a foot file, did a nice long foot soak in my tub with their fizzy foot soak, used their salt scrub all over, and lathered up with their cracked heel lotion. It was super high quality. Afterward my gf got to pick my toe color; I said "something spring" and she proceeded to select a very dark metallic green. She says it is the color of trees. Okeydoke.

How I did it:

This one was also tricky, building routines when half the time I'm in bed at night and half the time I'm bed at morning. But some flexibility worked, and now no matter what time I go to bed, there's a calm and relaxing routine first of skincare, some herbal tea, and a podcast to listen to.

How I did it:

I was dreading a lot of therapist-hunting and trying different people, so it was a huge relief to hit it off really well both in personality and approach with the first person I tried (of course, this was after a LOT of online comparisons). Her office is easy to get to, she had a convenient time slot open for future appointments, I felt super comfortable talking to her and her approaches sound like they'll work for me. Such a relief.

A big help was finding smoothies and juice in huge bottles, which lets me quickly drink a serving when I'm on a work lunch or super tired. I'm also rediscovering a lot of foods I used to eat more of, like green salads and apples and bananas. Adding this to my Habitica and other goal trackers also helped. I can definitely feel a difference in myself since I started eating more fruits and veggies, which leaves less room for junk.

November 19th was my mother's birthday. My mother was a deeply generous, compassionate person who devoted her life to helping other people, and who passed those values on to my brother and I.

After my mom passed away in 2015, my brother and I began a tradition that honors that about her. On November 19th, we go to her favorite coffee shop downtown and order her favorite drink, two hazelnut lattes. We tip the barista $50 and give them another $50 to pay for as many people in line behind (read more)
