The Third Man, Carol Reed-- A classic very dimly remembered from my childhood and thoroughly enjoyed as an adult. Great wit, great acting, great use of space and shadows and the backdrop of post-war Vienna. The only thing I wasn't sold on was the zither.

Nymphomaniac, Lars von Trier (Director's Cut):

Five and a half hours of my life I'm not getting back. Generally his films are ugly in such a gut-wrenching, important way that it's worth putting up with his background misogyny. This is just ugly for the sake of his misogyny front and center. Still beautifully shot, I'll give him that much.

    Take Me to Church, Hozier

    My lover's got humour

She's the giggle at a funeral

    Knows everybody's disapproval

    I should've worshipped her sooner

If the heavens ever did speak

    She's the last true mouthpiece

    Every Sunday's getting more bleak

    A fresh poison each week

    "We were born sick"

    You heard them say it

    My church offers no absolutes

She tells me "worship in the bedroom"

The only heaven I'll be sent to

Is when I'm alone with you

I was born sick, but I love it

    Command me to be well

    Amen, Amen, Amen, Amen

    Take me to church

I'll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies

I'll tell you my sins and you can sharpen your knife

    Offer me that deathless death

Good God, let me give you my life

If I'm a pagan of the good times

    My lover's the sunlight

To keep the goddess on my side

    She demands a sacrifice

    Drain the whole sea

    Get something shiny

Something meaty for the main course

That's a fine looking high horse

What you got in the stable?

We've a lot of starving faithful

    That looks tasty

    That looks plenty

    This is hungry work

    Take me to church

I'll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies

I'll tell you my sins so you can sharpen your knife

    Offer me my deathless death

Good God, let me give you my life

No masters or kings when the ritual begins

There is no sweeter innocence than our gentle sin

In the madness and soil of that sad earthly scene

    Only then I am human

    Only then I am clean

    Amen, Amen, Amen

    Take me to church

I'll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies

I'll tell you my sins and you can sharpen your knife

    Offer me that deathless death

Good God, let me give you my life

    Hallelujah, Leonard Cohen

I've heard there was a secret chord
That David played, and it pleased the Lord
But you don't really care for music, do you?
    It goes like this
    The fourth, the fifth
The minor fall, the major lift
    The baffled king composing Hallelujah

    Hallelujah, Hallelujah
    Hallelujah, Hallelujah

Your faith was strong but you needed proof
You saw her bathing on the roof
Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew you
She tied you to a kitchen chair
She broke your throne, she cut your hair
And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah

    Hallelujah, Hallelujah
    Hallelujah, Hallelujah

Maybe I have been here before
I know this room, I've walked this floor
I used to live alone before I knew you
I've seen your flag on the marble arch
Love is not a victory march
    It's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah

    Hallelujah, Hallelujah
    Hallelujah, Hallelujah

There was a time you let me know
What's real and going on below
But now you never show it to me, do you?
And remember when I moved in you?
The holy dark was moving too
And every breath we drew was Hallelujah

    Hallelujah, Hallelujah
    Hallelujah, Hallelujah

    Maybe there's a god above
And all I ever learned from love
Was how to shoot at someone who outdrew you
And it's not a cry you can hear at night,
It's not somebody who's seen the light
    It's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah

    Hallelujah, Hallelujah
    Hallelujah, Hallelujah
    Hallelujah, Hallelujah
    Hallelujah, Hallelujah

    The Cave, Mumford & Sons

It's empty in the valley of your heart

The sun, it rises slowly as you walk

    Away from all the fears

And all the faults you've left behind

The harvest left no food for you to eat

You cannibal, you meat-eater, you see

But I have seen the same

I know the shame in your defeat

But I will hold on hope

And I won't let you choke

On the noose around your neck

And I'll find strength in pain

And I will change my ways

I'll know my name as it's called again

‘Cause I have other things to fill my time

You take what is yours and I'll take mine

Now let me at the truth

Which will refresh my broken mind

So tie me to a post and block my ears

I can see widows and orphans through my tears

I know my call despite my faults

    And despite my growing fears

But I will hold on hope

And I won't let you choke

On the noose around your neck

And I'll find strength in pain

And I will change my ways

I'll know my name as it's called again

So come out of your cave walking on your hands

And see the world hanging upside down

    You can understand dependence

When you know the maker's land

    So make your siren's call

    And sing all you want

I will not hear what you have to say

    ‘Cause I need freedom now

And I need to know how

To live my life as it's meant to be

And I will hold on hope

And I won't let you choke

On the noose around your neck

And I'll find strength in pain

And I will change my ways

I'll know my name as it's called again

Anywhere I Lay My Head, Tom Waits

    My head is spinning round

My heart is in my shoes

I went and set the Thames on fire

Now I must come back down

She's laughing in her sleeve at me

I can feel it in my bones

    But anywhere I'm gonna

    Lay my head boys

    I will call my home

    Well I see that

    The world is upside down

My pockets were filled up with gold

Now the clouds have covered o'er

And the wind is blowing cold

    I don't need anybody

Because I learned to be alone

    And anywhere

    I lay my head boys

    I will call my home

    Who By Fire, Leonard Cohen

And who by fire, who by water,
who in the sunshine, who in the night time,
who by high ordeal, who by common trial,
who in your merry merry month of may,
    who by very slow decay,
and who shall I say is calling?

And who in her lonely slip, who by barbiturate,
who in these realms of love, who by something blunt,
and who by avalanche, who by powder,
who for his greed, who for his hunger,
and who shall I say is calling?

And who by brave assent, who by accident,
who in solitude, who in this mirror,
who by his lady's command, who by his own hand,
who in mortal chains, who in power,
and who shall I say is calling?

    Her Kind, Anne Sexton

I have gone out, a possessed witch,

    haunting the black air, braver at night;

dreaming evil, I have done my hitch

over the plain houses, light by light:

lonely thing, twelve-fingered, out of mind.

A woman like that is not a woman, quite.

    I have been her kind.

I have found the warm caves in the woods,

filled them with skillets, carvings, shelves,

    closets, silks, innumerable goods;

fixed the suppers for the worms and the elves:

    whining, rearranging the disaligned.

A woman like that is misunderstood.

    I have been her kind.

I have ridden in your cart, driver,

waved my nude arms at villages going by,

learning the last bright routes, survivor

where your flames still bite my thigh

and my ribs crack where your wheels wind.

A woman like that is not ashamed to die.

    I have been her kind.

    The Sick Rose, William Blake

    O Rose thou art sick.
    The invisible worm,
    That flies in the night
    In the howling storm:

    Has found out thy bed
    Of crimson joy:
    And his dark secret love
    Does thy life destroy.

The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock, T.S. Eliot (excerpts)

    Do I dare
    Disturb the universe?
In a minute there is time
For decisions and revisions which a minute will reverse.

For I have known them all already, known them all:
Have known the evenings, mornings, afternoons,
    I have measured out my life with coffee spoons;
I know the voices dying with a dying fall
Beneath the music from a farther room.
    So how should I presume?

I have heard the mermaids singing, each to each.

I do not think that they will sing to me.

I have seen them riding seaward on the waves
Combing the white hair of the waves blown back
When the wind blows the water white and black.
We have lingered in the chambers of the sea
By sea-girls wreathed with seaweed red and brown
Till human voices wake us, and we drown.

The Waste Land, T.S. Eliot (excerpt)

April is the cruellest month, breeding
Lilacs out of the dead land, mixing
    Memory and desire, stirring
    Dull roots with spring rain.
    Winter kept us warm, covering
    Earth in forgetful snow, feeding
A little life with dried tubers.
Summer surprised us, coming over the Starnbergersee
With a shower of rain; we stopped in the colonnade,
And went on in sunlight, into the Hofgarten,
And drank coffee, and talked for an hour.
Bin gar keine Russin, stamm’ aus Litauen, echt deutsch.
And when we were children, staying at the arch-duke’s,
My cousin’s, he took me out on a sled,
And I was frightened. He said, Marie,
Marie, hold on tight. And down we went.
In the mountains, there you feel free.
I read, much of the night, and go south in the winter.

What are the roots that clutch, what branches grow
Out of this stony rubbish? Son of man,
You cannot say, or guess, for you know only
A heap of broken images, where the sun beats,
And the dead tree gives no shelter, the cricket no relief,
And the dry stone no sound of water. Only
There is shadow under this red rock,
(Come in under the shadow of this red rock),
And I will show you something different from either
Your shadow at morning striding behind you
    Or your shadow at evening rising to meet you;
I will show you fear in a handful of dust.

The Second Coming, William Butler Yeats

Turning and turning in the widening gyre
    The falcon cannot hear the falconer;
    Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
    The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
    Are full of passionate intensity.

    Surely some revelation is at hand;
Surely the Second Coming is at hand.
The Second Coming! Hardly are those words out
When a vast image out of Spiritus Mundi
Troubles my sight: somewhere in sands of the desert
A shape with lion body and the head of a man,
A gaze blank and pitiless as the sun,
Is moving its slow thighs, while all about it
Reel shadows of the indignant desert birds.
The darkness drops again; but now I know
That twenty centuries of stony sleep
Were vexed to nightmare by a rocking cradle,
And what rough beast, its hour come round at last,
Slouches towards Bethlehem to be born?

I generally find Datlow's picks more hit and miss than other horror editors and this was still the case here, but the hits were real gut punchers.

@spatz It's so easy! Wash and hull the berries, throw them in a tupperware container with booze (I used a full bottle and then strained it afterwards to make cocktails, but most recipes say 2-3 cups in general), and let them soak for a full 24 hours. Drain, dry, roll in sugar.

Getting into the harder stuff now-- conjunctions and grammar are not NEARLY as fun or easy as learning the names of colors or zoo animals. I think it's time to start supplementing my apps with some more in-depth guides.

I haven't celebrated my birthday in years, for a lot of personal reasons-- and this year I successfully managed it by avoiding it. I still didn't celebrate my birthday, which is on June 12.

But June 13 was one of my days off, and I decided to just make it a "Special Day." No party, no friends, no expectations. Just me and whatever I wanted to do.

I slept in, gave myself a facial steam and charcoal mask before my shower, and then went to do something I have always wanted to try-- a sensory deprivation float tank. It was incredible, one of the most relaxing experiences I've ever had. Afterwards I went for lunch, grilled shrimp and mojitos. On the way home I used my bday reward for free iced coffee at my fave cafe.

When I got home, I went straight into my PJs, laid out a bunch of appetizers and sweets I'd picked up beforehand-- strawberry cocktails, olive cheese bread, chicken salad croissants, champagne-infused sugared strawberries, macarons, nuts, a huge one-person strawberry cupcake-- put on my favorite stupid comedies, and spent the night just noshing and laughing and having a fun, relaxing evening. It was absolutely fantastic and I can't wait to do it again next year.

@mycupofstars Wow, sounds like an awesome day! Happy belated birthday! Can you tell a bitmore about the floating? How was it? Wasn't it scary to lay in the closed tank (claustrophobia?). You really sparked an idea in my mind now to also celebrate my brithday as a day of self love.

@rainbowssparks Yay, I'm glad it was inspiring! The floating is super relaxing; the water is skin temperature and very thick with the salt so it's kind of like being weightless. I don't have claustrophobia so I was fine, but I actually asked about that for my girlfriend. You have the option of soft colored lights if you don't like dark enclosed spaces, and because it's in a darkened private room you can also control how much you want the lid open or shut-- so you could have it cracked or halfway open and it sounds like you still get a lot of benefit.

Meru, Jimmy Chin and Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi-- The last movie for my documentaries goal. I was kind of torn on this one; the cinematography was stunning, the shots of the mountain peaks and the thrilling climbs. But the story itself really needed some outside perspective. Worth it alone for some of those mountain views, I guess.

Room 237, Rodney Ascher-- A fascinating look at the hidden symbolism and subtext that people ascribe to Kubrick's The Shining, from the Holocaust to the Minotaur to Kubrick's hidden confession that he faked the moon landing. I absolutely loved the juxtaposition of voiceover with Kubrick's other films rather than talking head shots. Just fascinating.

Finally got around to this one to give myself a break from a ton of spring cleaning and decluttering! I am highly recommending Bath & Body Work's pedicure stuff from their True Blue Spa line-- I exfoliated with a foot file, did a nice long foot soak in my tub with their fizzy foot soak, used their salt scrub all over, and lathered up with their cracked heel lotion. It was super high quality. Afterward my gf got to pick my toe color; I said "something spring" and she proceeded to select a very dark metallic green. She says it is the color of trees. Okeydoke.

So relaxing. I started by boiling a small saucepan of water and doing a 10 minute steam under a towel with relaxing music playing-- my girlfriend made me this incredible tub tea with oatmeal and rose petals and dried herbs for Solstice, so I added a couple spoonfuls of that to the water and it was beautifully fragrant. Then did a dead sea mud mask which was so cooling and nice, rinsed off under cool water, and finished with an apricot toner/serum. It was so relaxing, my skin just glows and feels (read more)

Well, one way to get motivated for this goal is to lose your power. My city got hit by a massive windstorm and thousands of us were without power for almost a week. So I found myself at the library quite a bit, curled up reading and enjoying the warmth and light while my phone charged. It was really nice just to browse the stacks and look out the windows-- our library has a great view of the waterfalls and the river.

So much fun! I've lived in this neighborhood 6 years, and this is the first time I didn't have to work during the annual street fair. I think the key to this goal for me was not trying to split everything up evenly, which is where I've failed in the past. I had to be realistic about how exhausted I am on weekdays versus the energy I have on weekends, and allow myself to do less some days of the week. I also had to be realistic about not deep cleaning the entire house every week; I put the basics down as weekly and added in deep clean in different areas once a month.
