    Thoughts about joy and 43T:

I've deleted my "do x every day" and "do x every week" goals. I'm going to try to do them again for 2018! But honestly, because I've been so busy, they were just kind of stressing me out.

I'm going to try to keep this goal in focus in the coming weeks...just as it's "in focus" here on my 43T list!

And I'm going to try to make 43T my "landing page" for internet breaks, rather than FB or Twitter. I'm not in the habit yet of coming here regularly, and I'm changing that. FB and Twitter can often bring me down, whereas this is such a positive place!

@BeingBryn 110% with you there. When WordsNColor 1.0 some got deleted at first I was bummed, but upon remaking the account I decided to keep my 43T down to only what I was actively working on. A visible list of 'everything on the back burner was discouraging.

I hardly ever use FB for that reason anymore. It's too depressing, and has a sluggish vibe about it.l makes my brain feel melt-y

@BeingBryn Most of Facebook are people reposting pictures or memes other people have creatively come up with or opinions on some subject rather than posting on their actual lives now anyway. I have been guilty of it too to some degree. I don’t want that. I want people posting on what they are doing with their lives, such as with here. to me that is inspirational.

THis community was a happy answer. Also limiting my time, Instagram and Pinterest became my newest addiction, it hit me that I was watching others be creative and that was making me a fan and not an active player. I wanted to be on the field and not just sitting on the sidelines. πŸ™‚

Last night we went to see U2 -- the Joshua Tree tour. I didn't realize until right before the show that they were going to play the whole Joshua Tree album straight through! It's maybe the best rock album of all time. Amazing!

Their music has always meant so much to me, and it was my first time seeing them in concert! Tonight I took a long walk and listened to their 2014 album and a newer song by them. It got me so inspired about life and about my fiction writing project.

How do you forget how much you love something? It does happen to me sometimes! But that's what this goal is all about...remembering what I love again and reclaiming my joy.

Have you ever felt like you've lost yourself? Like, who you are?

I've been working so hard this year, and I've had a lot of new responsibilities and worries...but the worries are really optional, right?

I feel like I've lost the free-spirited, high-spirited person I was. And I want her back!

I want to dance around my house and sing in the car.

I want to smile at strangers and have fun with my friends and family.

I want to see sunrises and sunsets and take long walks in the moonlight.

I want to make out with Mr. Donovan and make him laugh.

I just want to be me again!

So far in 2017, I've had some great times, but I've mostly gotten bogged down and overwhelmed...and there's no way I'm letting that continue.

I'm going to have a wonderful autumn and a beautiful Christmas, and finish the rest of the year right.

We have so many fun things we are planning on doing for this season! A friend of ours is in a big metropolitan choir, and we get to go to their rehearsal of Handel's Messiah for free. My brother and sister-in-law are coming to visit. We're going to go out probably more than once to look at light displays.

I've been off of Facebook for 3 days. That might not sound like a lot! But I was so much in the habit of clicking over there and checking in dozens of times a day. I was in about 100 secret groups. So it's actually a big adjustment.

So far...it makes me feel younger. Which makes sense, right? When I was younger, I wasn't on Facebook! I feel like I'm not getting my battery drained. I am tracking all of my time on the Internet, but other places (including this one) aren't as addictive.

    Honestly, Facebook is terrible.

Of course, some good things happen there, but I believe the bad outweighs the good.

It's specifically designed to take up as many hours of your life as possible. So much of it is outrage and misery on a constant loop. Is the world really getting worse and worse? Probably not. But through Facebook, we hear about every bad thing that happens everywhere.

I think it's terrible for our brains and our lives.

I use my author page to share blog posts. Beyond that, I'm planning to only log in rarely. I want more face-to-face friend time and less Facebook time!

Yesterday my husband learned that he was being downsized from a job after 13 years. It came as a complete shock to us.

I am feeling pretty good about the idea of him being at home, at least for a while. I think with one of us taking care of the house and making dinner and such, we will be so much less stressed! I think we may even be happier and have more fun.

We do need to be thrifty, though! Fortunately, there are a lot of things we can cut back on.

    The first thing I'm going to do is make a list of cheap dates. &#xsmile;

    2017 MUSINGS

At the beginning of 2017, I really did not believe that my new business venture would move forward. I felt like it would fall apart, and I would be disappointed. So I said my word for 2017 was FUN, and I made all these goals about having fun.

WELL. My business DID move forward. And I worked really hard, and there were many weeks (and maybe a couple of months) in which I had no fun at all!

Here are my triumphs and joys, and my defeats and sorrows, of 2017...

    TRIUMPHS AND JOYS

    launched a business

published a good novel...and celebrated my release and my friends’ releases!

saw Hamilton and U2 with Mr. Donovan

(recently) gave up wine drinking at home

spoke at health care rallies and attended anti-racism rally

    visits with family

a Hallmark Christmas movie based on my treatment!

great teaching and visiting speaker sessions

    DEFEATS AND SORROWS

my grandma's death...we were very close

β€œlost weeks” of doing nothing but work and sleep...leading to health issues

feeling less connected spiritually (connected to above, I think)

depression from not having enough writing and blogging time

overspending & not keeping track of expenses

    too much time on Facebook

my business not nearly where I want it to be yet

    **

I can look at this and think about what I want to do more of...and what I want to do less of!

    Two important pieces of news:

    1. Our first book is up for sale.

    2. I need to treat myself better so I don't die 🙂

Today Mr. D made me call my doctor about the heart palpitations I've been getting. I haven't really been thinking about them that much. After I got off the phone with the doc, I realized I'd accidentally lied. I said it lasts a few minutes -- it lasts about an hour, a few times a day. When he asked, I said I hadn't been drinking much coffee. I've been drinking massive amounts and I'm dehydrated. I've just barely been paying attention to what I'm doing to my own body.

It's not normal to have a racing heartbeat for long periods of time every day, and it's not normal to barely be aware of it. I need to cut back on my hours and worrying now.

The stupid thing is, I've worked like this before (at an agency), and I swore I'd never do it again!

I'm going to stop working at 7 pm at night and not work on weekends, I'm going to drink water, and I'm going to get lots of sleep, and we'll see how that goes.

This continues to be a challenge! Who knew that startups were hard, right? Hahaha.

The great news is that I have a lot of support. I met with my boss in L.A. last week and I was really honest about how I was feeling. He could not have been any more helpful or understanding! It looks like I probably am going to get more help next year. He gave me a lot of good advice. He also said I should feel free to loop him in more when I run into snags, and that I could call him if I was really feeling low. Honestly, I knew I'd feel so much better after talking to him face to face, and I did.

I was just talking to a new friend who's been involved in a couple of startups in India...she had such a bad experience with her last boss. So I know how lucky I am.

Being in a different city from everyone I work with will always be a hindrance. My boss recommended that I pick up the phone more, which goes against my grain a little, haha, but of course he's totally right! Sometimes it's a lot better than email. Plus, that way even if there's some confusion or disagreement. people can hear in my voice that I have good intentions and I like them.

    Guys. This new venture.

I've been feeling so demoralized. It's a lot of work, of course, and a lot of responsibility. I'm the only person working on it full time, and everyone else is in another city. In the past month or so, it's been a serious challenge to my happiness and mental health, and I can't let that continue.

The workload is too heavy for one person. Even if I did nothing but sleep and work, I couldn't get it all done, and I'm not willing to give up a life outside of work.

I've asked my boss for part-time help, and we'll see what he says tomorrow. Either way, I realize that I have to stay more balanced and not let worries about the business overwhelm me.

Honestly, it's a crazy amount of work, but it's also really satisfying.

The first product releases are a challenge. They were on such a tight time frame, and I'm working with people I've never worked with before. But all I can do is do my best. 🙂 I've drawn up a marketing plan, and I'm meeting with people next week to take about implementing it.

Guys, I backed out of the class.

Well, the place looked very hard core karate and krav mega, which made me nervous... according to my doctors, I'm not actually supposed to do martial arts because of the one kidney. Mr. Donovan was very worried about it.

And he drove me there (it was in Lawrence, 45 min. away from us) and would have to drop me off and pick me up, and that didn't seem like so much fun for him since he was not feeling that great? So I decided to spend time with him instead.

I will get this one done! But I think next time I'll talk to the instructor beforehand to make sure I feel comfortable.
