    Riding in the village today

Our town has a small village in the south part of town. I rode some of those streets today. I o not travel in the village much, so I was repeating streets a lot. At least it felt that way.

I am making progress on this goal. I have the north east part of town done. I'll be working on the more populated areas now. These areas are father from my house, so I should take some time to figure out how to efficiently cover these areas. Or not, and just ride.

    New Biking Goal

I have been thinking about this for some time. I wanted a biking goal with a little more to it than just riding a bunch of miles. I can up with this little acronym, Ride Every Road In Town.

So, by the end of the year, I want to ride my bike on every road in town. I looked it up on the town highway page and my town has 128.3 miles of roads. Now that does not sound too difficult to do. I ride 128 miles in a week sometimes. The issue is my town has a lot of housing tracts and many are cul de sacs. So I will be repeating many roads just to get to cover all the winding roads of these tracts.

Also, the town is fairly spread out, so I have to travel some to get to roads I need to ride on. But that is the fun part.

And best of all, I can use Google Earth to track my progress. Attached is Ride 1.

I'll get another ride or two in next week. It finally is suppose to get warm here.

@aenea Yes, I'm hoping it is fun. I'm on my bike so it has to be fun. I should know my town much better as it progresses. Stay tuned.

@bob1623 how populous is the place you live? Just curious. Urban vs suburban vs rural riding would be quite different experiences, though I'd imagine you might be doing some of all three.

@aenea It is mostly suburban, winding housing tracts. There is a village, kind of urban. A small rural section with small farms. that is disappearing though and being filled with housing tracts. The town's population is about 42,000. It is on the large size for this country.

@bob1623 sounds lovely. πŸ™‚ my town is about the same size, but more industrial than agricultural, and with many steep hills surrounding a big river valley. I feel like I know it pretty well having driven all over, but have found that riding a bike even in an area I know well gives me a different perspective. I often feel like I know the place better after exploring by bike, so I think this is a wonderful thing you're doing. Wish more people would take the time to do it. Might humanize us all a bit more.

@aenea Your town sounds like my kind of place to bike. I like hills, steep hills too.

I know the main roads in town, but not all the housing tracts, so this will give me a chance to explore roads I have never been on. Already I have seen a few places that were a bit surprising. And i agree, exploring by bike lets you see and absorb so much more.

@bob1623 Great challenge! Maybe you could use a city map and a red pen and track where you've been that way, too. Or set it up on a fitbit, I think, if you use one.

@diamondlightfoot I have a more techy method to keep track of the roads I travel on. I use a Gamin device which tracks my route via GPS. I can then download the route I travel to my computer and then bring it into Google Earth. I see all the roads I ride on and I can bring in all the rides at once. It gives a nice overall picture of what I have done.

Here is what I have so far.

@bob1623 I love your techy method! You've been busy! I know the newer fitbits use a gps, but I'm not sure what else they link to. Your way goes much nicer!

@diamondlightfoot Thanks. I get to use a lot of techy stuff for something really kind of simple. But that is the world we live in. I made the route tracing yellow now so it is easier to see.

I've got a lot of roads to cover, so this will be interesting.
