A life skill everyone should have really. I hate cooking, love eating. I am curious about what it would take to improve though.

Soooo......I almost didn't cook tonight.....but then I remembered I had an organic delivery the other day and had tomatoes and fennel to use up....so I researched pasta recipes.....

Here is the one I did: I didn't have any kalamata olives so used black instead. Definitely needs kalamata for the bitter to contrast with the salty capers and sweet sauce....but wasn't bad. I also had no saffron or pine nuts or parsley....

Coolest lesson learned- cooking the garlic in olive oil unpeeled a few minutes makes it so much nicer to press!!

Made Russian vegan borscht and pyrahi late last night. These recipes were handed down in my family via my late grandmother who's mother came from southern Russia to Canada before the communist revolution with the help of Tolstoy.

It was a challenge this time because I had to make it gluten-free. The flour made the dough tricky to maneuver and so I was not able to recreate my grandmas "weave" in the pastry, but they baked just find and were pretty tasty! I need to practice more.

Like many people I love burgers. You can get very creative with burgers. This one has a burger (I know crazy) a hash brown, onion and egg patty, bacon, Frank's red hot sauce (that is used a lot in my kitchen), mayonnaise, cheddar cheese, lemon juice and Grape Jelly (that is what is on top, the burger wasn't burned) between two buns.

I have, as of late, been trying to get all 5 flavours in my dishes, sweet, sour, bitter, salty and unami.

In case you are wondering . . . It was so, so, so yummy!

Instead of adding cream or milk to a soup. I tried making a bechamel sauce in the last half hour of the soup and then combining and serving. The texture was amazing. I have tried it with several cream soups and works so nicely.

Learning how to make the 5 French mother sauces is very key to anyone with this goal.

The picture is a beat soup or borscht that I prepared this way.
