All Done, except for the paying

Sat with my tax guy for about a half hour yesterday and he got both state and federal taxes done. E-file was done also.

I do owe money to the US Treasury, but am getting some money back from the state. So it is all good and now this is done and life can resume.

@bob1623 Good job. I got to do my taxes through credit karma and it was free. I usually use Turbo Tax, but it usually costs me close to $150 for both federal and state to use. Last year, I broke even with having to pay some to federal and got some back from the state, but that went to pay for the filing fees.

This year, free filing, got money back from both state and federal. Not a big refund, but glad we don't owe this year.

Got mine done a week ago and already the state has electronically deposited my refund to my account as of last night. Arizona is quick. Wonder how long the federal refund will take to get back.

@ligemst Great that you got your refund so quickly. I'm not sure how long NYS takes. It is not a big deal no matter how long it takes.

My tax guy only charges $75 for his work. I figure it is worth the convenience and since my wife has self employment income, he knows how to handle all these issues.

Glad now this is all done, until next year.

    Appointment Today

I am meeting with my tax guy today. I have all the numbers; wages, taxes, etc. I just need my wife's charitable contributions number and I will be all set. (I have been asking her for this for 2 weeks. Of course she waits until the last minute to get it for me.)

I should be able to mark this done tonight.

    2016 TAXES DONE

This year's taxes were much easier than last year's where in 2015 I was still self-employed. I was not employed in any paying manner in 2016.

However, to help me better assess medical stuff, I think I need to keep track of what is put on the FSA and what we have to pay as time goes on rather than wait until tax time with regards to medical/dental/vision costs.

It took me about 3 hrs to do our taxes. I was able to e-file and do the taxes for both Federal and State for free this year!!! Normally I use Turbo Tax, but I used one of the credit agency things we subscribe to and that's a part of our subscription to file taxes for free.

The federal taxes were accepted quickly. Waiting for the state to accept my e-file.

Anyway, we have a refund for both federal and state. Not huge, but at least we don't owe. This is an acceptable amount to get for a refund that isn't a waste. I think when you get thousands back for either federal or state, you're paying too much and should reduce that amount to be much less.

The government doesn't pay you interest on the money that you overpay. You can take that difference and reinvest it into something.

I do have friends that will get $5,000+ in tax refunds each year, some even close to $10K. I feel that's a waste and that they don't have discipline with their finances. They could take that extra money and buy some stocks of some good companies or something and watch it grow. Not big into mutual funds, but that is even better than letting the government hold onto nearly $1K of your money each month.

And, these people I know have debts. If they don't reinvest the money, at least use the money to pay off your debts as those debts accrue interest.

Anyway, last year we owed a little in federal and got a refund for state. It was almost a wash with a slight amount net refund. I like now owing.

    This should be easy

Yes, this should be easy, but for some reason I always procrastinate on this. I only have to do a few things:

    1. Gather all my statements

    2. Call my tax guy for an appointment

    3. Go to the appointment

    4. Write two checks, one to my tax guy for his services and another to the US Treasury. One is small, the other could be much larger.

One and two are now done. Half way done on this goal!!

You can type any date in plain English like in 3 weeks or next month.
You can also type in recurring due date like every day, every week and every month.
