It's finally going! I met with the Social Worker and nurse on Monday. MIL's niece was there, too (somehow she has inserted her into the process) MIL was having such a good day that the nurse warned us at one point that she was not showing the need for care and was close to being denied! Stressful. Finally they asked some questions about math (which she can't comprehend anymore) and her dementia started to appear from then on. I hated her embarrassment, but we need to have this assistance.

@missak I hope the cuts that trump is trying to make don't affect this for her. My brother in law uses it, too. He lives on about $1000 a month and can't afford health insurance any other way.

@diamondlightfoot I hope so, too. This is a good program, rather new, that allows seniors to stay in the home with medicaid paying for the in-home care. They realize that it is cheaper than paying for a nursing home if it is possible for them to still be in their own home. (although, we still have to pay for utilities and maintenance of the home, which uses all of her social security)

@missak It's incredible how much nursing homes cost. I hope I'll always be able to take care of myself and Harlan, too. I see this all too often, working with taxes. The nursing homes in this area take their homes as collateral if the social security isn't enough to meet their costs, leaving little for any family to inherit.

I was trying to explain to her neighbor that we can't afford to pay his 12 year old nephew $40/week for lawn mowing. We pay the caregiver nearly $1000/month. His response :" the caregiver better learn to mow lawn!". What a jerk. He was the one that shamed us that there wasn't someone there taking care of her. Now he is complaining that her lawn isn't kept as nicely as he wants. Ugh! So, I'm failing at everything ~ once again.

btw - lesson learned. (in Michigan) If you hire a family member/friend to be a caregiver and claim the expense on the application, you must have a caregiver agreement in place before they begin working! ot

April is done. The application is in, but they need more information. We are averaging about $250/month to mom to help her with her expenses. It is getting really frustrating.

You can type any date in plain English like in 3 weeks or next month.
You can also type in recurring due date like every day, every week and every month.
