I put in a lot of time with my sweetpea from the second she was born l was by her side. So she's three and us spelling her name so l decided to teach her some new words with letters from her name..
Grandma: "Scarlett- how do you spell cat?"
    Scarlett
She wrote it then spelt it!

So Madam three decides to be a hairdresser, "Grandma l'll brush your hair come here!" So she's smashing my hair with her brush and tells me "You have lots of knots, be brave Grandma l'll get it!" So l'm on the kitchen floor and l ask "Will you be a hairdresser and go to special hairdressing school?" She says "I'll be a hairdresser and do your hair everyday!" I haven't had an offer that good in a long time.

This conversation just confirms that how we speak to them becomes their inner voice! I always tell her "Be brave while l get this knot out!" Being a Grandma is such a joy! I am so blessed that l get to be so hands on with three of the four!

Monday night trying to occupy a tired 3yr old l gave up cooking dinner and instead sat down with an old magazine and a pen. We took turns to circle the letters in her name. Then she asked me to write her name. As l wrote l sounded out her letters and then left her there while l went to the other side of the bench to start dinner and very quietly l hear her... S C A R L E T T l snuck a look over my shoulder to see her pointing at each letter as she spelt. When her Mum got home from work she did it again to show Mum! The next day she told her Aunty "I can spell my name" without her piece of paper with the written letters she spelt "SCARLETT"
I take full credit for this and l am so impressed! Her name is bigger than she is and its not an easy name to spell when you are just three!
So the moral to this story is as the words on the poem by Ruth Hulbut Hamilton go... " The dust and the conwebs can wait till tomorrow children grow up as l've learned to my sorrow, so quieten down cobwebs and dust go to sleep l rocking my Baby and babies don't keep!"

Here is the full poem- when all five children lived at home l had this printed in my fridge for all to read!!

    Song for a Fifth Child
    by Ruth Hulburt Hamilton

Mother, oh Mother, come shake out your cloth,
Empty the dustpan, poison the moth,
Hang out the washing and butter the bread,
Sew on a button and make up a bed.
Where is the mother whose house is so shocking?
She’s up in the nursery, blissfully rocking.
Oh, I’ve grown shiftless as Little Boy Blue
    (Lullaby, rockaby, lullaby loo).
Dishes are waiting and bills are past due
    (Pat-a-cake, darling, and peek, peekaboo).
The shopping’s not done and there’s nothing for stew
And out in the yard there’s a hullabaloo
But I’m playing Kanga and this is my Roo.
Look! Aren’t her eyes the most wonderful hue?
    (Lullaby, rockaby, lullaby loo).

The cleaning and scrubbing will wait till tomorrow,
For children grow up, as I’ve learned to my sorrow.
So quiet down, cobwebs. Dust go to sleep.
I’m rocking my baby and babies don’t keep.

Oh dear!! The council are out trimming trees l hope only trimming! This tree is directly across the road from us its very special to our family!
Every night Grandpa and Sweetpea have a bedtime ritual where they go out and say "Goodnight" to the trees!
This one is called rough tree!
Also on the nightly route are "Bob's tree" "white tree" and "Charlie's tree"
Rough tree is also where we release our spiders that are removed from the house and we check the ants as well as pat the tree and say "nice rough tree!"
Every night Rob must carry out this ritual looking for Harboos and the Moon and the stars ✨
sigh the things you do for Grandchildren!

Hair Cut day! Miss threeanger has been so excited so this morning it was all about Grandma!
"Grandma will dress me!" So l did!
"Grandma will do my hair!" So l did! Then she did mine fairs fair!
Then .. "You should wear your dress and boots Grandma Like me!" So l did!
I've never worn a dress and boots but it worked she was so happy and says "Wait till Grandpa see how beautiful we are!"

Usually she sits up on my knee to get her hair cut but today she sat up like a big girl.. I am becoming redundant!

So tonight, I give madam treeanger a potato and a peeler and let her "help me" cook dinner, until her Mum ranted and raved about how dangerous it was to let her try and peel a potato, to which I replied "and yet YOU are still alive. If I didnt kill you she's pretty safe!" So I took away the potato and peeler. A little while later I hear madam threeanger tapping something and I turn around to see her and she says "Grandma- here is my letter S, here is your letter K and here is W for Uncle" so the earlier practise on the laptop stuck with her! She looks like a school teacher or a travel agent here!!
