Basically, as with most any tumbling, you can’t be afraid. You are going to to fall, you might get hurt, and it doesn’t come easy, but you CANNOT be afraid of this. Fear is what makes these things impossible for many (not that everyone is going to get to the same levels of course, plus overall fitness and weight is obviously important). But definitely don’t attempt to learn this (even if you could previously do it at one point) without either being at a gym where they have equipment that gradually helps you achieve back/front tumbling or on a soft surface with a spotter who knows what they are doing. The handspring is where people usually start get scared in their training, or anything where you take both hands off the ground, even for those few seconds. You just have to go for it if fear is what is getting in your way. I was a gymnast from when I was young until when I was a teen so I had extensive training from a young age. My sister didn’t, so when she became a competitive cheerleader it was a huge hurdle for it and most of her problems stemmed from fear and the mental block it causes.

Eh, I have mono and the doctor says that it’ll last a while. So, until I can actually work on this goal, I’m taking it off my list. Hell, I don’t even know if I’m really that motivated.

Ok, well, I’ve been taking tumbling since September, and unfortunatly I haven’t really gotten anywhere.

My front handsprings are beautiful and I can do a mediocre backhandspring out of a mediocre round-off. Yeah, not good.

I’m determined to get my standing this summer. I’m gonna be conditioning and working at this the best I can..I feel that the only thing that’s gonna hold me back is the amount of time to work on my actual back handspring. My class is about an hour and half; once a week.

So, can anybody offer any drills to do at home for my BHS?

Thanks :)

Back Handsprings  — 3 months ago

I got my round off back handsprings because my p.e. teacher urged me to. and now i have it good but i still haven’t quite gotten my standing one. When I do it I either Get scared and turn really weird when jumping bback or land on my knees.
