After almost a decade as a semi-serious figure skater… yeah… I think I can say I skate better than many people… and that wouldn’t be bragging. :)
There are few things as lovely as skating on a cool, smooth, silent surface. Just listening to sound of your freshly sharpened blades as you fly around corners and dance across the ice. I’ve always equated that to a sense of personal peace and freedom. It’s like my problems can’t touch me when I’m on the rink.
I won’t say I was a really good figure skater. ‘Cause I wasn’t. I was pretty average. I just loved being on the ice. I don’t skate anywhere near as much as I used to. In fact, I think I’ll add that to my list… skate more often. :) However, I’d recommend that everyone learn to do this. It’s an amazing feeling and a huge confidence boost to be able to scoot around quickly on an ice surface and be able to stop on a dime. You’re friends and family will be amazed and you’ll impress the hell out of that cute guy/girl you’ve had your eye on. ;)
As an added bonus, learning to skate well is like riding your bike. You will never forget. Even if you go years between skating sessions.
