He procured and installed it for us yesterday as a surprise when I came home from work. :)

It’s already helped us cut down on random TV watching a lot.

These things are great. I never have to rush home or rush ANYTHING to watch a movie or tv series. I’m never giving it up…NEVER!

This piece of equipment is the coolest ever. Not only does it let you record a show it lets you record all the episodes of that same show…. and you dont have to live by the schedule of television but live to do things and watch movies. watch the shows when you have time or feel like it.

This has been great for me, I’m spending less time watching TV! no commercials!!! It also made me realize how much TV I do watch…i mean all those shows I am taping! So, I am trying to cut back.

Dish TV DVR  — 1 year ago

    Worth doing!

When we subscribed to DishTV last fall, we got a DVR as part of the package. While perhaps not including all the features I’d want, it is GREAT and I highly recommend DVRs to anyone who watches any television. I wish I could use a web-based interface to schedule programming (I think you can do that on a TiVo) and also wish the system would automatically NOT record commercials. I think the latter feature is not available on any DVRs sold in the US currently because of lawsuits from advertisers. In any event, having a DVR is potentially transforming because it permits you to be more intentional in your consumption of televised content. This is highly desirable!

I finially got our DVR installed by Direct TV. Their customer service this time around sucked. We ordered it at the beginning of August and we just got it installed yesterday. They stood us up twice and came 2 hours late when they finally did arrive. If I didn’t like NFL Sunday Ticket so much, I would have gone elsewhere.

Sigh. I did get 3 months of showtime. Perhaps something else when they learned we were stood up another time and then installed late. They gave us showtime after the first canceled appointment.

And yet, after all that, I love it. So much.

    I Got TiVo  — 2 years ago

    Worth doing!

Two weeks ago The Good Guys was having a going-out-of-business-all-sales-final sale. On impulse I bought a Tivo for $100. It was not in the box, (this was down to the wall dvd players, et el. without boxes, manuals, remotes…), I found one bag with connecters, remote, manual for a TiVo dvr. It looked like everything was there so I got it.

It looks like it must have been a return because it was already setup with a zip code in a town near by.

Now that I have reset the zip code it seems to work fine. I am surprised that you can’t record and watch TV at the same time without a splitter. Setting up a splitter is what I’ll be doing tomorrow.

If I had purchased it in-the-box new I would have bought the lifetime service from TiVo. But, since I don’t know it’s history and I don’t think it is under warrenty anymore I will live with my “new” dvr from month to month.

I really should have done some homework on this first. But like I said it was an impulse.

I purchased the Hauppauge WinTV PVR150 as a Christmas present to myself and the next day I picked up Beyond TVs DVR software, which works like a charm. Now I don’t have to worry about missing anything or getting home at the right time to catch my favorite shows. Best of all, it runs on my PC, so if I want to archive any programs, I am able to burn them to DVD.
