I used to know in the eighth grade…I’m not so sure anymore.
Hugz65 is feeling sorry for herself.
I got the machine, picked out my first pattern, bought the fabric, washed the fabric, read the directions, and got a book on how to adjust the pattern. Now I am scared to cut the fabric.
adelea is happy for once!
Worth doing!
i learned to sew when i was 5 and its not so hard but making stuff that is good quality takes longer than a day even longer than a week but its totally worth it.

I used to want to be able to create brand new original outfits, but now I want to just know the basics. I want to be able to hem pants. I want to be able to do simple mending. I want to be able to eventually tailor my own clothing. That sounds like a lot of work, but it would be nice to be able to do that for my family.
The closest i am to completing this goal is being able to hem my pants, which is not much. Though i used to make my halloween costumes.
When i have the time and the patience to figure this out, i will work on it.
I admire anyone who is able to put together a costume for a child that they love. When my niece was younger, I managed to come up with a few non-sew costume projects for her. Handmade is so much more personal!
I have been admiring the beautiful heirloom quality costumes of an ebay seller, and I commented today that I wish I were as creative as she is. My friend responded that I was indeed that creative, but that I just express it in different ways.
Still, I’d like to be able to make a simple pillow using vintage fabrics and trims. I’ll take it one step at a time and perhaps, if I’m persistent, I will make a costume someday!
I want to be able to make my own clothes eventually. I have a lot to learn before I get to this point. I’d eventually like to make my own dresses and wear them out. I think I’ll start off a bit slower than that though.
closer. I bought the book “Sewing for Dummies”. Don’t have any urgency to reading it just now but when I do it will be there.
Once you get going, sewing is brilliantly simple and fast. An awesome skill which NEVER goes out of style (YES, EVEN FOR GUYS!) Even if you can only do the most basic repairs (which anyone can learn quickly) everyone will think you’re terribly handy and useful, including yourself. Start by hand (look it up basic stitches online, they make sense) and then eventually learn to use a machine. Study your store-bought clothes once you get going so you have better idea of what you’re going for as a finished look. Once you have the patience to get going, life is good!
Unfortunately with any skill you become to go-to for “can you fix this” but just be very honest if you don’t know if you can or if you don’t have the time. Start small and be confident with your own projects before you start doing orders for others.
PS- FOR THE MORE ADVANCED USERS:
Yes, threading a serger will always suck. I promise it never gets any easier and will always make you want to defenestrate the machine. Resist the urge.

Emily asks,
“How do mini sewing machines perform? The one I'm considering buying is a 3/4 size by Kenmore, but I want to make sure it can do everything a normal sized machine can do.”
