It can't be that hard, can it?  — 4 weeks ago

I have a fairly sound knowledge of HTML & CSS. Now I want to master Javascript. I’ve made several attempts to learn the basics, but found things way too confusing. I just need to apply myself and focus on really understanding each thing before moving onto the next. I’ve bought a book – DOM Scripting by Jeremy Keith – which I’m hoping will be my saviour.

I AM NOT GOING TO LET IT BEAT ME!

I am already a ridiculously competent HTML coder. Time to branch out and learn some more code.

But, I think that I need to learn a more basic programming language first, such as Perl, Ruby, or Python. Not sure which one I’m going to learn first yet.

scriptaculous  — 3 months ago

discovered scriptaculous and prototype last week. Pretty awesome. Will incorporate it into my church’s website…

I don’t really need to learn this.

Working on this  — 3 months ago

I find http://eloquentjavascript.net/ to be quite helpful, it’s simple but not ‘dumb’ from the start, and explains things like closures, functions as a type of variable and ehr.. stuff like that, better than me :-)

ps. I’m pretty good with PHP/SQL (freelancing), and JavaScript turns out not to be the toy language I thought it was ;-)

headfirst book  — 4 months ago

working through the head first javascript book; finished 2 chapters. So far, looks pretty good…

I think I know it well enough now anyway  — 4 months ago

Worth doing!

Though I’m not the greatest at programming anything. Like the previous said, I relearn a lot of it all of the time. Things like prototype and jquery have made javascript fun.

Worth doing!

like a previous poster said you will never completely learn javascript – I use it in my job a lot but every now and then I need to learn a new function/ a new way of doing something. And sometimes I even need to relearn parts of it. Done let that discourage you though, as my knowlege of javascript and other web languages has landed me a great web design career :)

Finished my course  — 5 months ago

Worth doing!

Well, I’ve just completed my JavaScript course – several weeks early, I might add. Did I “learn JavaScript”? I don’t think so. Did I “learn SOME JavaScript”? Sure. Everything is a process and I now at least have an introductory level understanding/appreciation for what JavaScript can do. It’s enough to build on.

Goal completed.
Moving on to tackle my AJAX goal…
