I don't think I'm in good enough shape for this  — 1 year ago

I’ve wanted to fence since I was a child watching Zorro on t.v. However, it is a physically demanding sport and I haven’t even gotten back into my Tai Chi routine yet. So… as with some of the other goals, I want to do this…. just not ready yet. Think I will check out how much it costs and the locations it is offered though… nothing like being prepared when the motivation strikes.

    Worth doing!

It’s not Errol Flynn; don’t expect that coming in. Fencing is entirely worth it every step of the way. It has its frustrations, but the victories and the general aspects of it outweigh that greatly.

You’ll want to start out with the foil, and prior to that you want to get your footwork down. After a little while, once you’ve got a bit of footwork under your belt (by then you’ll have done bladework too) you will begin to bout (or fence, or spar).

Then if you wish you can move on to either the epee or the sabre. They are different from the foil, but are also a lot of fun. I myself am a sabrist, and I think it’s the best weapon out there for its speed and aggressiveness. But you should choose a weapon that you feel an attraction to and that you think is fun.

Fencing is amazing… I HIGHLY suggest you find a club near you and start today! If you want to know more about fencing, take a look around fencing.net. They’ve got a good bit of info there, plus a little gadget that helps you find a local club/school.

    Good luck!

    Worth doing!

I am currently learning, and it is really great. We are learning first with bamboo, and we will eventually move up to better stuff (i hope)

    Chyeah, its worth it.

...but it ain’t happening any time in the near future. I’m taking this off of the list until I am serious about it.

New idea I knicked from someone else’s 43 things: Take a fencing class at the local community college! HAHAHA! It’s GENIOUS! Why didn’t I think of this before?

Fencing seems so incredibly cool, and also exotic and “yeah, right” ish in it’s out-of-reachability. But, uh, I bet they have a class!

    Spring Quarter. Oh yeah.

    Worth doing!

Be sure you rock your footwork before you ever pick up a sword—it’ll pay off in the long run (and make your blade-crossing experiences all the more enjoyable).

    Good luck!
