learn to speak spanish fluently

We’re six weeks into spanish 101, and we’re moving very quickly. I’m definetly learning a lot and I’m enjoying it. So far, I’ve picked it up pretty easily. I love all the spanish songs! Estudio mucho!

I’m signed up for Spanish 101 at Carleton in the fall. I’ve taken five years of french, which is fun to know, but not particularly useful in everyday life (especially not in Southern California), but hopefully the French will help me with the Spanish because a lot of the sentence construction is similar. I think Spanish will be very important to know as a doctor, and I think it is important to be able to communicate with the people in my community. I hate all the nativist junk that everyone should learn english. Obviously, people would elect to know english if they could, but there are so many more pressing concerns. I think its important to make the effort to learn spanish so that people feel welcome and I can help them. The greatness of America is based on its multiculturalism, so I believe becoming multilingual is a way to tap into the great American spirit that we don’t always live up to.
