that we go to London for Christmas though I don’t think she was really serious, but I started looking into it anyway. My preference would be to go for 2 or 3 weeks but we don’t have that kind of time or money right now, but a really targeted 7 day trip could be really fun and not too crazy expensive.

I started looking at theater schedules as my agenda in London and the UK in general is a huge culture binge which involves tons of theater. Looked at ticket prices for RSC’s Hamlet with Tenant and Stewart and couldn’t find anything for much less than $470 per ticket. All in the stalls. I thought that was a bit much. Sort of eye popping actually. But Donmar Warehouse has a production of 12th Night with Derek Jacobi as Malvolio over that part of December which we could afford balcony seats for and I am sure that would be a fabulous production. I saw the best Macbeth production I have ever seen at Donmar in 1987 I love 12th Nigth anyway. Lost track of how many productions of it I have seen at this point. I designed lights for one when I was in college. Also some interesting looking productions in the end of December at the Royal Court and at RSC Stratford. So we would have some theater options beyond the big West End glitzy stuff. And I haven’t even begun to dig very far into the land of smaller theaters.

I digress. I have not yet looked for music opportunities at that point in December. I imagine we could see/hear our fill of lots of early music and perhaps some choral music. Also, targeted trips to favorite museums like the Tate could be accomplished on a short trip. Perhaps a walking tour or two. Perhaps a day trip to Sissinghurst. Not sure what all. You can’t cram a lot into 7 days and I wouldn’t want to. Been to most major touristy things before so wouldn’t feel compelled to do that stuff. Though,I haven’t been to the Museum of London before and I do think the British Library might be on the agenda. Shopping can be skipped. Perhaps a guided literary walking tour would be fun though.

Oh. Time for bed.

snowleopard10 Zonino!

sounds like a lovely plan!

The Museum of London is great, but its location is a little weird, down near the Barbican. I think it’s being redeveloped at the moment but is still open.

If you’re going to the British Library you’re not too far from the Wellcome Collection which is an excellent relatively new museum covering medicine and science, with very fun and sometimes interactive exhibits, plus a lovely cafe and bookshop.

It sounds like you know your way around theatreland, but the Official London Theatre website might be worth a look as it covers the smaller theatres too.

other suggestions?

I’ve heard of the Wellcome Collection before because of their library and the online exhibits. I know we would both really dig that collection.

Initially, I was kidding when I suggested this, but, who knows? I’m renewing my passport.

ooh

thanks for the suggestions and links.
I remember the area around the Barbican was weird in the 80s. There was that yellow line painted on the pavement to show the way from the tube station.

I do think I have seen stuff online from the Wellcome Collection. Definitely something in our areas of interest.

If you hear of anything really special in theater land for the end of December let us know.

wren is mega mighty!!!
